Vogabyggð is Iceland's next generation of sustainable urban development – a new community by the sea that transforms a former industrial peninsula into a vibrant, human-scale neighbourhood. As the first large-scale realisation of Reykjavík's municipal development plan 2010–2030, the masterplan reconnects the city to its waterfront through a network of streets, squares, and boardwalks. Vogabyggð is Iceland's next generation of sustainable urban development – a new community by the sea that transforms a former industrial peninsula into a vibrant, human-scale neighbourhood. Within the masterplan of Vogabyggð, JVST has been commissioned to design a series of waterfront apartment buildings on the former industrial peninsula of Gelgjutangi. The Open courtyard building (1.2) is the first of these – a robust sculptural volume that steps down in terraces from the urban street toward the water, maximising sun exposure and views over the adjacent marina. The Coolhaven waterfront area is an urban stepping stone in the city of Rotterdam that has become an example of the potential of mid-rise high density development in cities. The project consists of an ensemble of 14 buildings and a new waterfont park. The new buildings contain a mix of housing, offices, commercial and retail spaces and have been built in a logical grid that connects 2 intimate squares and a vibrant square towards the waterfront park. The contrast between the open waterfront and the dense, but permeable, urban blocks create a rich urban experience. This is made possible through the implementation of a unique new urban typology that functions as a hybrid between a super-dense city block, a campus, and a village. Put together, a dense and very friendly neighborhood revives this previously desolate waterfront site in the center of Rotterdam. In the Goffert station area, the landscape takes the lead. The winning proposal for this urban redevelopment starts out with a structure of green spaces, alleys, and public courtyards. This framework organises the playful placement of a diverse range of building typologies and program, ensuring they contribute to a sense of enclosure and liveliness and providing a dense network of pedestrian and ecological pathways. The Delfshaven area is one of the very few locations where delicate fragments of historic urban tissue have been preserved in Rotterdam. This project relates to the essence of the old heritage of this area: the scale and grain of the historic city and its network of public space, with squares and alleys. Contrasting the newer generations of surrounding building blocks, this project provides a subtle transition between the public and private domain. In 8 small urban blocks, 4 family dwellings have been organized back-to-back. A semi-sunken parking garage is located under the plan and the squares. The dwellings encroach on the garage to ensure friendly and inhabited facades along all streets. Commissioned by a group representing the main land owners of the area, a redevelopment proposal was developed by JVST. The proposal explores a transformation scenario for the harbour area Faxaflóahöfn Örfirisey in Reykjavík from a grey, industrial port into a vibrant urban seafront district – a city port where maritime and commercial activities blend with housing, innovation, workspaces, and spaces for relaxation and recreation. Vesturvin is situated at the intersection of three urban conditions: the historical city centre, the harbour area, and the Reykjavík waterfront. Our proposal responds to these surroundings by introducing a hybrid typology – part urban block, part alley or street – that weaves a new, connective fabric into the existing city. The Grófarhús library is located in downtown Reykjavík on a prime spot on the edge between city centre - Tryggvagata - and the old harbour - Geirsgata. The City of Reykjavík envisions an inclusive transformation of its downtown library: a place where everyone is welcome and can find knowledge, support, connection and tranquillity. A beacon in the truest sense of the word. Housed in a former warehouse dating back to 1930, the building has undergone multiple alterations and extensions over the years. On the site of a single, 150 meters long, 10-story apartment building in Overvecht (Utrecht) a green, car-free neighborhood with approximately 300 apartments and houses will be built. More than half of them will be social housing. The urban plan connects to its surrounding post-war environment but also takes position: the neighborhood is being transformed from a place with a hard and unclear public space to one where public space is soft and clear. Green, car-free living streets connect with Overvecht's orthogonal urban fabric. At its heart, a central square will be created where the original play pond will be restored. Cool Cube is a sturdy, cube-shaped family house in the centre of Rotterdam. With its spatial three-dimensional layout the building responds to the opportunities of urban life, providing community as well as privacy to its inhabitants – both connected to and sheltered from the street and the surrounding city. The house forms the sculptural end piece of a new brick terrace within an existing urban block. Its plain white brick façade marks a deliberate presence in the streetscape, the raw materiality at once rooting the building in its context and setting it apart.
